“Science can purify Religion from error and superstition; Religion can purify Science from idolatry and false absolutes.”

~Pope John Paul II, June 1, 1988, from a letter to the director of the Vatican Observatory

Plato and AristotleScientists and theologians in conversation, together with philosophers who bring metaphysical language to the table, are bridging the divide between science and religion. STOQ events bring them together several times a year in a fruitful exchange and further study.

The 2009 ‘Darwin Year’ provides an opportunity to advance the dialogue over the relationship between science and religion. In this bicentennial of Charles Darwin’s birth (1809) and the sesquicentennial of the publication of On the Origin of Species (1859), STOQ is holding several events that invite scientists, philosophers, theologians, students and all those interested in exploring matters of faith and reason to discuss theories of evolution.

The aim of these events is to engage in the interdisciplinary study of humanity that includes the moral and spiritual dimension of who we are, and what we do. The ultimate aim is to contribute to the ‘new humanism’ called for by Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI.
